I am trying to locate about 50 used computers, 386 or 486 to take to Ghana.
They will be installed at a Forestry Research Station (FORIG) in Kumasi.
The work of the research station is to regenerate an endangered species
tree, the Iroko, which is of significant commercial value and could provide
a much-needed export crop for small Ghanaian farmers in the years to come.
Other significant work at the station is to preserve the rainforest habitat.
The Foresters at the research station are already supplied with powerful
laptops and even have access to GIS. The 125 administrative staff are still
I am the computer consultant who hopes to do the installation and training
in May of 1997. I have had some nibbles from major corporations and am
continuing to follow that avenue. I hope to locate a company that wants
some good publicity for "helping the rainforest" while they undergo a
conversion to Windows '95. This will require Pentiums for the most part and
they can release their used machines to this worthy cause.
I would appreciate any information on used computers that they can donate or
any leads to an appropriate company for this project. I have already combed
through the computer donation sites on the WWW with no luck, although I have
sent a number of donated TRS 80 laptops to the Computers for Africa project.
Thanks for any and all information, Denise
