University of Minnesota Duluth
Assistant Professor in Graphic Design
Full time (9 month), tenure-track appointment

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Teach graphic design including computer-based graphics, typography and
other areas as assigned. Join 3+ faculty member graphic design team,
support a rapidly growing major, share in the supervision of student
internships. Teach in planned MFA program and participate in undergraduate
and graduate curriculum development. University and community service,
advising, and research/creative activity expected.

QUALIFICATIONS:
M.A. in design related field, minimum. MFA, terminal M.A., or PhD in
graphic design or related field preferred (degree in hand by 7/1/97).
Exceptional professional standing may substitute for terminal degree.
Broad view of graphic design required. Demonstrated evidence of effective
teaching and/or communication skills required. College level teaching
experience in computer-based graphic design preferred. Knowledge of
graphics software such as QuarkXPress, Illustrator, and Photoshop on the
Mac required. Director or other motion graphics and/or interactive
software knowledge preferred. Familiarity with computer-based motion
graphics, interactive multimedia, or video, and/or graphic design history
and theory preferred. Professional experience in design or related field
preferred; record of national design awards/publications, writing on
design for popular and/or academic press, and/or evidence of innovation in
teaching preferred. Evidence of the production of high quality work and
ongoing research is required.

SALARY RANGE:
$30,000-$33,000 commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Opportunities for additional evening and/or summer session teaching
assignments may be available.
Term of Contract: September 1, 1997-May 31, 1999; renewable.

UMD is the second largest campus of the University of Minnesota system.
The Art Department is the largest in the region with 250+ students, more
than half of which are in the graphic design concentration. The University
maintains extensive Mac-platform computer facilities for student use. The
Tweed Museum, a regional art museum sited on campus near the Art
Department, is developing a serious graphic design collection.

Duluth is 2 1/2 hours north of Minneapolis on the western tip of Lake
Superior. It is an active port, a cultural, medical, and business center
for northern Minnesota, and a popular tourist destination. Duluth hosts a
symphony, theater, and professional sports teams in addition to activities
on campus. Duluth is also a center for outdoor sports including extensive
facilities at UMD, 65k of cross country ski tracks within the city limits,
and easy access to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.

and 20 slides of your students' work (if available) with annotations.
Additional work on Macintosh disk, Mac Syquest cart, Mac Zip disk or VHS
video tape also accepted. Official transcripts and letters of
recommendation may be requested later and must be available on short
