Beet NicIsh and others
(Gawd, Bette, you must be nearly as old as I am)
Info on the Shaun Davey composition (Hi, MAQQI, beet ya to it).
'The Pilgrim', composed by Shaun Davey, a Celtic suite for orchestra,
soloists, pipe band and choir.
Tara Records, 4TA3032.
This number is on the cassette version, so there may be another ref.
for the CD version. Maybe Sharon could clarify this.
The piece was commissioned by the Lorient Interceltic Festival and
was first performed there in 1983. This revised version was first performed in
Glasgow in 1990.
The poem that Bette posted, attributed to Colm Cille, is narrated,
along with many more, by Irish actor Mick Lally. Other
artists/ensembles include Liam O'Flynn, Rita Conolly, the Lorient
Festival Orchestra, The Glasgow Philharmonic Orchestra, the City of
Glasgow Chorus and the City of Glasgow Pipes and Drums.
An unusual feature of the suite is the use of the bombarde and
biniou, two Breton variations on the bagpipes.
Much of the poetry is in Irish and translations are on the insert
(don't know about the CD).
