One of my maternal great-grandfathers was a man named William
MacGregor. Now, if I remember correctly, the Campbells were "hired"
by King James VI & I to exterminate the MacGregors in the early 17th
century. Yikes! And, of course, the history of the lowland Naesmyth's
includes a couple of run-ins with the MacGregors.
No wonder I'm so nutty. <grin>
According to my information, Augustus MacDiarmaid was cleared from
somewhere near Loch Awe in 1830/1; he may have had a connection to
the town of Kilninver (which is on the coast). This area is listed in
my references as being MacAlpin/MacDougall territory, with the Campbells
(Argylls) on the other side of the loch. Hmmmm... I see that rural
Argyll was cleared of 40,000 people in the mid-19th century. Boy,
I've got a lot of research to do...
Thanks for the info, Atheling!
