All major cities in the U.S. and Canada give away millions of dollars to
Irish and Scottish groups have been traditionally and historically excluded
from these grants as they are not considered to have a culture or be diverse.
For example, when I tried to get funding for a Celtic dance group, the arts
adminstrator argued with me for 20 minutes that the Irish do not have a
culture, that they are "white" and not deserving of grants, and that the
Irish do not belong in the multiculture.
I argued back that the Irish are part of the multiculture and also deserve
to be included in the grants structure.
The administrator refused to put the Celtic dancers on the mailing list,
saying he did not have "enough time" and that he was "too busy" to add the
Celtic group, (although he had 20 minutes to argue that Irish don't have a
After 6 months of persistence, I got on the mailing list.
Another administrator told me the Scots were "too small" a percent of the
population and did not deserve funding.
But the best one of all is when yet another arts adminstrator told me that
the grants were only for professional groups and ADULT dancers only.
Imagine my surprise when I went to the performance of said grant and saw
that the dancers, from another ethnic group, were children of 6 to 9 years
old, waving streamers on the stage, in a most unprofessional manner. The
performance resembled a recital for the children's parents.
Finally, I got a hate call from a person claiming to be Irish who said the
Irish have no right to get grants, as they are rich and besides, they have
Having said all of this, do not despair. If you are extremely persistent,
you MAY be able to pick up some of the crumbs off the ground when it comes
to the various grants.
If someone tells you you don't have a culture, do not despair.
If someone tells you you are white and do deserve a grant because your
culture has never suffered, do not despair.
If someone refuses to add you to the mailing list for grants, do not despair.
If someone tells you your culture has "never suffered", watch WHEN IRELAND
STARVED. Read PADDY'S LAMENT.
If someone tells you they do not want any children/young people in your arts
group, only professionals, do not despair.
Be persistent, and you may be able to overcome some of these obstacles.
Contact your City or County's Office of Cultural Affairs. Every city of any
size in the U.S. gives away beaucoup dough.
Even if you are called a "white", "anglo","caucasian", "supremacist",
"extremist", "rich", "non-suffering", "undeserving", etc. do not despair,
you can do it. [I have been called all of these and more!!!!!]
With persistence, it is possible to go from a zero budget, to a budget of
$50,000 or more in one year!!
If interested, please reply on CELTIC-L.
Who is just starting to tap into some of the dough.
