I hope to visit the countries below starting the end of next week.  I
would welcome the opportunity to visit with persons involved in
Internet development.

Uganda Sep 19 to Sep 27

(A) USAID mission strategic planning for information technology

(B) WFP remote rural radio electronic mail initiative to explore
appropriateness of this technology for other initiatives

(C) Explore with local service providers possibility of a
Kampala-based technical "help desk" to serve USAID partners and their
service providers in the region.

Kenya Sep 27 to Sep 28

Meet with AfricaLink liaison at ICRAF to plan future activities
under their grant from USAID's Global Bureau, including their
possible funding of a regional technical "help desk".  (ICRAF =
International Centre for Research on AgroForestry)

Meet with staff of ICIPE to plan their role as an information
resource center within the Integrated Pest Management Network.
(ICIPE = International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology)

Ivory Coast Oct 4 to Oct 11

Meet with the AfricaLink liaison at WARDA in Bouake to plan future
activities under their grant from Global Bureau, and to explore their
possible funding of a regional technical "help desk".  (WARDA = West
African Rice Development Association)

Cameroon Oct 11 to Oct 16

Meet with staff of the World Bank and UNDP/REIMP, which will serve as
an electronic gateway for environmental information for the region,
and which will be collaborating closely with the CARPE Project.  As a
center of technical expertise, staff of the project, based at the
university in Yaounde, may be called upon to provide backstop
technical support for CARPE collaborators in the region.  (UNDP =
United Nations Development Programp; REIMP = Regional Environmental
Information Management Program; CARPE = Central African Regional
Program on the Environment)

Gabon Oct 16 to Oct 19

Meet with newly installed CARPE staff to develop a strategy for the
use of information technologies by CARPE primary and secondary
collaborators in the region.  (CARPE = Central African Regional
Program on the Environment)
