Butcher's (Copy-Editing The Cambridge Handbook for Editors, Authors and
Publishers) glossary definitions...
club line - the first line of a paragraph at the foot of a page. Also
called an orphan.
orphan - the first line of a paragraph at the foot of a page. Also
called a club line. See also widow.
widow - the short last line of a paragraph at the top of a page.
Typesetters try to avoid widows by making a pair of facing pages one
line longer or shorter than the rest.
