Clean water vs. web access?
Clean water (conditions for survival) is mandatory, and so is communi-
cations beyond the local community (progress). I don't think it is a
matter of choosing between them or even prioritizing, but of choosing
to focus on one or the other for subjective reasons - i.e., out personal
experiences and commitments in life.
While survival (social reproduction) is a precondition for any struggle
for progress, in some cases we are willing to risk our lives for progress.
At the same time, progress is essential because in many cases present
and future do not offer the conditions for a decent life. For many
people, passively accepting the status quo is not worthy of our dignity
Please excuse the philosophy that does not link directly to rural circum-
stances, but it seems to me, that however poor we are, however difficult
our circumstances, there always remains an opportunity to rise above
circumstance to struggle for positive change. Even if that is often
impractical, I think it should always be insisted upon in principle.
