Reaching back to my earlier memories---the forme had a papier ma^che' (Damn
this accent-challenged ASCII) mold squished into it and a typemetal cast of
that (which was called stereotype) was what was used on the press. Although
I sort of associate it largely with newspapers and rotary presses, I
remember that we had an old (really old---looked like it fell off the back
of Caxton's lorry) Albion press that was relegated to sticking stereotype
to blocks to make it type high. (Ah those were the days: the clatter of the
presses, the pressmen crawling inside the bigh flat-bed letterpress
Heidelbergs---though usually not when they were clattering)
