"Claddagh" is the name of a fishing village on the outskirts of the City
of Galway where the tradition of the Claddagh originated. It no longer
exists, having been demolished during the 1930's by the Galway city
authorities in the name of improved sanitation. There is quite a
tradition originating there, much too involved to set out here, but there
are books available on the Claddagh. I have one called "Down by the
Claddagh" by Peadar O'Dowd ISBN 0-906312-39-6, published by Kenny's
Bookshop, High St. Galway. Highly recommended.
