My name is Jack Carroll, despite the ID, which is left over from former days
as imposter on an academic system. I grew up in a rural village in the
western part of New York state, but have lived in New York City for over 35
My father's family originated in Moylough, Co. Galway and Drimoleague, Co.
Cork and are Catholic. My mother's family is Protestant and from Stabane in
the North. I've visitied the paternal family several times in the 1960's.
It was an interesting, but sobering visit. The family was quite poor by
U.S. standards -- very small farm, living in tiny three-room, thatched
cottage with cold water and little elec. Lovely, shy people though.
Travelled through Ireland eight times or so. Gorgeous country, but last
time there in late 80's found that Dublin was becoming too much like a U.S.
city -- street crime, drugs, rudeness, etc. The price of progress
I used to work in the misadministration of a large university, but became
disabled a few years ago. Have to spend most of my time at home, but that
gives me time to read all the things I wish I'd read as I was supposedly
Reading interests: Irish history and culture, Japanese and Irish novels,
philosophy, religion, language. Have been taking Irish classes for a couple
Other interests: Writing -- have completed one novel and am trying to find
an agent, have a second novel-in-progress being considered for the
semi-finals of a foundation award. Like Brasilian music, may start taking
trying to learn Brasilian Portugese. Like blues and some jazz vocalists, am
a big Etta James fan. Worked for many years as a volunteer in GMHC, the NYC
AIDS organization, have done lots of hospice-type work.
Was raised a Catholic, but became a Theravadin Buddhist quite a few years
ago. In politics I am something of a middle-of-the-road fascist liberal. I
am convinced that the U.S. has no problems which could not be cured by
sterilizing every other child born for the next decade, "disappearing"
anyone with a personal fortune of over $5 million and seven years of
incurable plague and followed by a famine. However, I always have been an
Sla/n go fo/ill.
