May I suggest you read the older children's book "Playing Beatie Bow" by
Ruth Park which was also made into a film. I deals with just this theme -
a young girl from the Orkney Islands who grew up in the Rocks in 19th
century Sydney.
 
IMHO the Argyle Cut in the Rocks has a certain feel - all that convict
labour it took to excavate, I guess, or perhaps its imposing scale or
ancient geology.
