Rail is fine between Dublin and Cork, Galway, Sligo, Limerick, Tralee and
Wexford. But if, for example, you want to go from Limerick to Sligo, you
have to go via Dublin. If you want to travel widely, especially to smaller
towns, you really need a car (= Irish auto).
