Remember that Shaitan (the adversary) who became Satan in later translations
was not always a bad guy. He and God were great pals, playing some kind of
game at Job's expense. He was pretty much a tool in God's hands too, to test
Job, with an attitude of :What happens if I do this to you?
No Sympathy for the Devil here, but it seems the concepts of a archetypical
manifestation of Evil seem to change as the religion gets farther from its
roots, or as the people need a fall guy (The Devil made me do it).
