I was researching (informally) copyright on something else recently and
according to the web page I visited (US Copyright Office?), any work
published before 1 Jan. 1920 is now copyright free (that is, if I read it
properly. Works published after that date MAY be in the public domain under
certain conditions (having to do with whether or not the original copyright
was renewed, and when, I think).
