....There must be something you can do......!!!!-round the bonfire!
-note that is some places bonfires are banned but not so cooking fires!
-especially cooking fires (as in for pit beef) contained in a pit in the
Dig a deep pit. (36 inches or so deep by the same wide or maybe 2 1/2
put your fire in that and cook something......then later as the fireman comes
with a few tickets.....well you can just tell him about the meal you just
and send him away!-- worked for me!
You can also put a good solid two layers of hard rocks about 6 in long by
two to three inches thick (each) laid on top of one another- burn the
fire from afternoon
till into the night almost to next morning. Let the fire die down sweep
asside the ashes
line the pit with greens-a good several layer covering over the rocks-
then place meat wrapped with greens onto the rocks. Cover with-2-3 layers
or whats available -more greens then a wet sheet then toss in the dirt-
do this all quickly. Wait about 5 hours
and dig up being careful to clean the dirt from the sheet before lifting
it from the meat.
Always unwrap the meat packages carefully - flip them over so that the
side toward the
greens and rocks is on top. Then dust off any dirt before opening layer
of greens by layer.
Always place the meat thick side down and with the opening to the package
Veg can be substituted for meat-or cooked as well. Lay some form of
on a wire mesh- as that used for fireplace screen is good. Then lay upon
brussels sprouts zuchinni and broccoli....anything you want- watch out
for potatoes they
may mush- use the harder veg. Place butter and spice/herbs to taste over
the veg. Be sure that there is 3-2 inches of space on the sides so that
the screen can be bound up properly.Cover with layers of greens then roll
up the mesh being careful that greens cover veg. Pull screen tight and
insert a wire to hold the screen together. Take the ends and constrict
them so that the screen rolls together to a pointed end-also anchor with
a wire- I use coathanger pieces. Set on top of the meat bundle when you
put it into the oven. As meal is excavated out dust off any dirt then
flip the package up- with seam and sid which faced the hot rocks up. Dust
off carefully and then open. Laying the mesh back .Find a very sharp
knife and cut the skin of the "veggie fish" The compressed leaf covered
package will have two pointed ends and look just like
a fish! - slice carefully just through the greens horizontally in the
center parallel to the long axis. Then slice short vertical lines
perpendicular to the horizontal cutthrough the greens on each end. With a
fork lift up the resultant flaps to reveal the fully cooked veggie
innards!---never fails to amuse the vegitarians!- dont worry if several
layers of greens
are used (4) it will be a bit scorched on the outside but the inside
will be just right.
