Can't speak for the world but . . .
I know my surname became Cowley (mac Amhalgaidh = pron. Macowlee = angl. Mac
Cowley = Cowley) sometime back in the penal times. Could have a lot to do
with the fact that the registering of Catholic baptisms was banned (along
with the baptisms & Catholic practices themselves) at the time. I dunno.
