Anti-Catholic does not, by default, mean Protestant. This statement
could mean that the people still held on to older Pagan beliefs or
those of the early Celtic Church (which was not Roman Catholic).
At the risk of nit-picking, surely anti-Catholic refers to any
attitude hostile to Catholicism. It does not refer to any "pro"-ness.
