INTERNATIONAL PROFESSIONAL LIBRARY STAFF EXCHANGE PROGRAMME

INTRODUCTION

The Centre for Development Information Programme (The CDI-Programme) wishes to
announce an international programme of exchange for professional library/
documentation and other information science personnel. The programme involves
visits and attachment to Kenyan institutions for librarians from foreign
universities, colleges and research centres. In addition, the visiting Fellows
give series of professional talks and/or demonstrations to groups of librarians
and other information scientists in topics of their own choice during a period
of up to three months visit. At the same time professional librarians from
Kenya are attached at the respective institutiuons abroad for the same period
and do the same there. At the end of it, it is the intention of the programme
to build an effective international network of librarians promoting
international understanding among nations of the world.

OBJECTIVES

The objectives achieved by this programme are:

1. to expose foreign librarians to the rich and diverse cultures of the peoples
of Kenya through attachment, visits and tours. 2. to expose and update Kenyan
librarians to the rich technological and scientific developments in other
countries through meaningful attachments and tours abroad. 3. to bridge the
information gab between developed and a developing country ie. Kenya. 4. to
provide an opportunity to streamline procedures for information exchange
between libraries in Kenya and those abroad 5. to promote mutual understanding,
tolerance and trust among the peoples of the world and Kenyans.

MANAGEMENT OF THE EXCHANGE PROGRAMME

The Centre for Development Information Programme, a non-profit making
organization promotes the use of experiential research as the basis for
decision making in any aspect of development. Its secretariat is based at Jomo
Kenyatta University of Agriculture Library but its constituency is nationwide.
The exchange programme is managed as a secretariat activity. The exchange
programme involving identification and placement of participants is organised
from the CDI Programme secretariat.

COUNTERPART COLLABORATION

Some organizations abroad collaborate with the CDI Programme and support the
exchange programme by coordinating the fundraising and identification of
fellowship funds to cover the expenses for the fellows in Kenya and abroad.
Such organizations are referred to as COUNTERPART CENTRES and individual
collaborators as COUNTERPART ASSOCIATES. We welcome any organization or
foundation in any country to seek collaboration in this important undertaking
and to assist in the attainment of the objectives.

WHAT THE POTENTIAL PARTICIPANT SHOULD DO

Anyone interested in participating in this programme should fill the
application form below and send it via email, fax or hard copy to us. After
receiving the application, the CDI Programme will commence the process of
placing the Fellow to the desired institution. At the same time, a dialogue
will be entered through email between us and the potential Fellow until the
individual programme of attachment is completed.

FUNDING THE EXCHANGE

The exchange programme seeks support for the visits for the two individuals
involved at any given time from the various foundations supporting this type of
programmes in developed countries. A number of organizations exist in these
countries to consider applications for this type of programme. In addition some
of these bodies can be contacted:

UNESCO
UNDP
IFLA
Commonwealth Fund
IDRC
DSE
and many other government donor agencies

The CDI Programme may also arrange group visits to Kenya for librarians,
including organising their accommodation and itinerary if requested to do so by
any organization abroad.

Your application for funding should include return airfair to the country of
attachment, your subsistence during the period of attachment, internal travel,
and a course in a language or technology other than the one you are familiar
with. For individuals visiting Kenya, a course in Swahili language should be
included in the budget. For Kenyans visiting any developed country, a computer
course should be included. A dialogue should be entered into with us in order
to arrive at a realistic programme budget.
