CALL FOR PAPERS

A major event of interest to the traditional music community is
being planned for April 1996 in Dublin. The Crossroads
Conference will take place over the weekend of the 19th-21st of
April in Temple Bar. It is hoped that the conference will bridge the
gap between the academic study of traditional music and its
performance by encouraging performers and other consumers of
traditional music to particpate alongside more academic
contributions, without emphasis being placed on either.
The theme of the event, indicated by the Crossroads title is
the current dialogue among musicians about the role of innovation ,
and how this can be balanced with the preservation of the
essentials of the tradition. Of obvious interest to music academics,
this is also of immense significance to the practical future of
traditional music in Ireland.

Tradition versus Change

Dublin April 18th -21st 1996

The current status of Irish traditional music is a controversial issue
among musicians, academics, and media personnel. Are recent
developments a sign of a healthy tradition or do they indicate a
tradition in danger?
Contributions are sought from all involved in Irish traditional music
- academics and non-academics, musicians, singers and dancers.
Those wishing to contribute should submit a brief one-page outline,
in Irish or English, on or before December 1st, 1995, to the address
below. These should deal with the main theme of tradition and
change, covering aspects such as commercialism, identity,
education, gender etc.

The Crossroads Conference, P.O. Box 118, Eglinton St. Cork
