Response to Andrew Keto's message of 8 August.

IDRC supports a DSS project in 5 African countries. The following is a brief
report on a recent event in this project.

REDATAM+ and GIS Workshop in Bamako, 19 - 30 July 1995

Centre d'Etudes et de Recherche sur la Population pour le D veloppement
(CERPOD) hosted a two-week workshop on REDATAM+ and GIS applications
development for researchers from five African countries: Mali, Burkina Faso,
Cameroun, Ghana and Egypt. The workshop was held in Bamako from 19 to 30 June
1995. Excellent organization and good equipment provided by CERPOD
facilitated very interesting and productive sessions.

The program for the workshop was prepared by Serge Poulard (CELADE - Latin
American Demographic Center), Brent Hall (University of Waterloo) and
Zbigniew Mikolajuk (IDRC). It included overview of decision-support system
technology, familiarization with GIS software and Windows version of REDATAM,
learning of advanced features of REDATAM+, and review of application
development methodology. The underlying idea of the workshop program was to
learn by discussing and solving concrete problems. Since the beginning of the
project in October 1994, participating institutions were working on
identification of applications, collection of relevant data, and installation
and utilization of software tools (REDATAM+, ArcView2, ATLAS-GIS, IDRISI, GIS
Tutor2). The workshop provided an excellent opportunity to compare
experiences and strengthen collaboration between African researchers.

The following computer specialists and REDATAM application developers
participated in the workshop: Ms. Diarra Fadima Diarra, Mr. Alpha Sidi Maiga,
Mr. Aboubacarry Dicko, Mr. Moussa Dolo (CERPOD, Mali), Mr. Michel Kabor
(UERD, Burkina Faso), Ms. Helene Kamgno, Mr. Kishimba Ngoy (IFORD, Cameroun),
Mr. Eric Augustt (RIPS, Ghana), and Ms. Amany Gad (CDC, Egypt).

All participants were very well prepared for the workshop. Their technical
knowledge and enthusiasm contributed to the success of the workshop. Some of
the applications presented and discussed during the workshop, allocation of
textile factories, monitoring diarrhoeal diseases, impact of family control
programs, planning of primary education development, have very high potential
to become operational packages which can be distributed in Africa and other
developing regions.

The workshop was a milestone event in the project "REDATAM+ and GIS for
Decision- support Systems Development in Africa" (#000023) which is a
component of a larger IDRC initiative to contribute to Agenda 21 objectives
in the area of application of information technology in decision-making for
sustainable development.

IDRC and the United Nations University/International Institute for Software
Technology (Macau) are preparing a workshop on software technologies for DSS
development ("Decision Support Systems for Equitable and Sustainable
Development"). You may find more information about the workshop on:
