Sorry, I forgot--the som was Edward III of England, died 1377. Reigned
1312-1377. due to his frech mother, he possessed a claim to the french
throne. he declared philip of valois a usurper in 1340 and with the help
of his mother laid claim to the throne--cut feudal connection between
france and england.
married to philippa, daughter of william III.
if i remember right, isn't this the feud that sparked the one-hundred
years war?? in brief sacnning, it talks of his alliances with the lowland
countries--and i remember them getting into a heap of trouble with philip
over that. Am I right?
he also sent the largest english army to calais in 1347, one year before
the plague, to beseige the town.
again, all this from the Oxford I. H. of M.E.
hope it helps!
