For books in general, I have found Waterstones in Glasgow and Edinburgh
(and they probably have branches in Inverness and Aberdeen as well as
other towns) to be well-stocked. More importantly, I've found their
employees to be knowledgeable (not only of extant works but of their
store's stock) and extremely helpful. On more than one occasion I have
put myself in their hands and they've not steered me wrong yet. In this
manner I have read much of what is considered contemporary Scots
literature and have learned a lot about the culture that way. (I take a
long list with me each time I go and come home with enough books to keep
me busy until the next trip, usually 2 years later.) Hope this helps.
