Practical taxonomy of tropical Indo-Pacific nongeniculate coralline algae
The course will introduce the nongeniculate coralline algae, and
examine their importance in marine ecosystems with particular
emphasis on coral reefs. The key characteristics of the families,
subfamilies and genera or will be presented in lectures and through
the practical examinatin of specimens. Genera not known from the
tropical Indo-Pacific will also be included. The common and
ecologically important species will also be introduced through
practical examination insofar as they are known. At least one field
trip to Suva barrier reef will be conducted, and there will be
opportunity for snorkling. Thus participants will have a chance to
collect and study specimens themselves, as methods of specimen
preparation and sectioning will also be covered. A diving trip may
be arranged at the end of the course for certified SCUBA divers at a
nominal cost (around US$35).
