Ever wondered why Archie, Veronica and Jughead are so called. Did you
ponder on their exact relationship to each other? Well, at last, here are
some answers courtesy of Jeff Curtis from Case Western University in
What? You mean you have never seen Archie? Wow. Well, I guess it is
pretty much just an American thing. I know that there was a comic in
England called Archie, but it was completely different.
Yeah, Archie is a really popular teen comic character. The comics
have been around since the '40's, and mostly popular with little
kids and older people nostalgizing. They are kind of cool I think.
Archie is the main character (Archie Andrews), and his best friend is
Jughead Jones, who wears a weird little beanie cap that has a sort of
crown-looking brim on it. Archie is famous for his red hair and his
old jallopy car. Jughead is famous for always wanting to eat hamburgers
and caring nothing for girls, only for food. Archie, on the other hand,
is constantly torn between the two girls in his life, Veronica and Betty
(who has yet to have an internet function named after her, poor girl!).
Veronica is a rich bitch, black hair, sexy, snooty, etc. Betty is blonde,
down-to-earth, girl-next-door, cute, humble etc. So you can see Archie's
dilemma! There are lots of other characters. In my opinion the best
Archie publication is called _Betty and Veronica Double Digest_ which
comes out like bimonthly or quarterly, is about 4" x 5" in size with
usually about 128 pages, and mostly concentrates on stories about
Betty and Veronica and how they try to make each other and Archie jealous.
I also always keep my eye out for Archie comics from the '60's where
they make fun of hippies, rock bands, psychedelic clothes, etc.
Betty and Veronica are really cute cartoon characters too. If you
have ever seen the comic called "Love and Rockets" by Los Bros Hernandez,
there is a big influence from Archie comics on Xaime Hernandez' art style.
