Just wanted to remind people that the American Folklife Center at the
Library of Congress has reference librarians who answer such questions.
They have a nice reading room that's full of reference books (includes an
Irish section), as well as vertical files stuffed with every bit of info
that comes their way on folk-related subjects. There are files on
individual songs (especially well-known ones, natch) and performers, as
well as for broad topics like "Irish-American Music." The staff is small
and usually backlogged with work, but if you can wait a few weeks for a
reply (by mail, phone, or e-mail), you'll probably get some useful info
from them. I know they try hard - I used to work there! Good people.

I'm not sure that they take reference questions via e-mail, but heck,
it's worth a try! [log in to unmask]
