Here in Tulsa we have a Celtic Music Series
sponsored by the Tulsa Folk Music Society
and the Tulsa Performing Arts Center.
As there is no sessiun, this is as close to
live Celtic music as we can get. This year they
did OK, with Celtic Fiddle Festival topping the list.
Unfortunately they only got things half right.
One of their worst mistakes was a Dallas-area band
named Folk Like Us, who played little or no
Celtic Music- one air by "Turlooo" O'Carolan.
I think part of the problem is that the
producers of the series have little more than
an enthusiasm for Celtic Music. They never sat in
on a sessiun, ceilidh or fleadh, or had any
experience with the music other than through
the CD player. They don't know that there is any sort of
network (on-line or off) of Celtic musicians.
At the last concert they solicited comments and
criticisms. I plan to write them and suggest some changes,
but to do this in a constructive way I really need to
provide part of the solution. Can anyone out there
provide me with the names and addresses for bands or their
management(s)? I do not mean only the big names
but also the smaller local bands who are organized
enough to have produced a tape or CD.
I also plan to go after some of the bigger names.
At the North Texas Irish Festival in Dallas, they
had Altan and the Sharon Shannon Band. It should be
fairly easy (I hope) to get them to come a little further
into the wilds of Oklahoma since they are already here.
We already have the audience, if we can just get the
best bands we can. This series has been going on for
Thanks for your help.
