Something tells me that Luka/Barry might have arched an eyebrow at the
way the subject line was worded ... ;-)
If there's anyone left who's still describing Luka Bloom as being in his
elder brother's shadow ... well, I think he's left that shadow far, far
The album is, in a word, brilliant. With one exception, the album is
strictly Luka's voice and one of his acoustic guitars (Rudy or Judy).
No band this time, as he wanted to approximate on album how his songs
sound when they're performed live.
If you've heard him perform any time during the last couple of years,
you'll recognize some of the songs: "Black is the Colour", "Holding Back
the River", "The Fertile Rock", and the stupendous Mike Scott cover,
"Sunny Sailor Boy". That song is the only exception to the "Luka-only"
rule on the album, as background vocals are added by Maire/ad Ni/ Mhaonaigh
It'll be on my Top Ten list for the next two months, at least. *Highly*
(Some obnoxious gobshite was giving Luka hell all night at the Troubadour
show in West Hollywood last week, and eventually shouted "Play an Irish
song!" Luka scowled, and said, "Hey pal, I was *born* in Ireland. These
are *all* Irish songs!" Why anyone would heckle at a Luka Bloom show is
beyond me ...)
