> From: "Greg G. Waite" <[log in to unmask]>
> 'The Well Below the Valley' is about atonement for sin (in this case incest).
> The song takes the form of a dialogue between a woman and a mysterious traveller
> (Christ?) at a well.
> You might like to compare it with the ballad 'The Maid and the Palmer' (Ballad
> no. 21 in the Child collection). These sorts of ballads seem to go back to the
> episode of Christ and the Samaritan woman at the well (see Gospel of
> John chap. 4)
All 3 songs (Well below the Valley, Maid and the Palmer,
Jesus Met the Woman at the Well) are versions of the same story
(its not always Christ she meets, just a very astute religious person)
but are not the same tune.
