I've really been enjoying the recent archaeology thread, as my main interest is
Ireland before the Vikings. I do have a question about the restriction of the
name "Celt" to those speaking a certain language. I thought the Celts were
without a written language until the time of their interaction with the Romans.
If that's true, we can only infer what they spoke by what literate
contemporaries tell us. Do we then only call the people Celts when we are sure
they were speaking a certain group of languages, or can we infer that an earlier
group were "probably" Celts because of cultural similarity?
