On the wren boys you might check Kevin Daneher's book
on Irish Calendar Customs. The wren boys went around
on St. Stephen's day; St. S. was the first martyr &
was stoned to death. Wrens have a curious place in
folklore & in many European languages have the term
"king" connected with them (e.g. Fr. roitelet; Germ.
zaunkoenig, "hedge king"). there are stories about why
the eagle conceded the title to the wren (check in
the Stith thompson Motif-Index of Folk Literature).
