for what it's worth, most medieval irish figures with the element
"cu" in their names are warriors, and the doggy bit of it seems to
connect up with the idea of warriors as wolves. similar is the
germanic figure of the "berserkr" in his bear shirt, which is also
allied to the "werewolf". there's an article by kim mccone in
cambridge medieval celtic studies in the late 80s with a title
something like "werewolves, diberga, and the devil's men: juvenile
delinquincy in early ireland." also you might look at carlo
ginzberg's Ecstacies: Deciphering the Witches' Sabbath, for european
analogs. he goes into werewolves at length, and we're not talking
about the Creature Feature here. anyway, if "cu" is more or less and
attack dog, then another word might also be needed for nice dogs.
aren't otters called something like "water-dog", using the other dog-
word, in irish?
