Another Boston bar question:
At the Plough & Stars pub, a much-favored drink was the Black &
Tan, which had Guinness at the top, and Bass ale at the bottom for
a crisp finish. My question is this: weren't the black and tans
the paramilitary forces in Ireland loyal to the English crown? And
wouldn't this be an unpopular reference in a modern Irish bar?
Or is there an element of irony at work here?
