A friend of mine was in the Peace Corps in Kabul some years ago and one of
the things he was struck by (actually there were a good number of them,
since he was there during its most violent revolutionary period: tanks and
bodies in the streets caught his eye, for instance) was that game, except
that it wasn't a ball they used (nor a severed head) but a dead goat. It
amounted to any number on a side, on horseback, on a large field, and
following the basic rule that anything goes (short, I think, of
nonaccidentally killing people on the other side) getting the largest
remaining fragment of the goat across a line at the end of the field. He
found it quite colorful.
