Well, the head as football makes sense.  Sort of sounds like the
"badger in the bag" referred to by the story of Rhiannon's trick
of having Pwyll get her suitor step into a "bottomless" bag,
thereby becoming trapped, as told in the Mabinogion.  'Course, that
may be a different game altogether--I've never been up on sports.
Polo had a similar beginning.  The Mongols played it with the
carcass of an enemy, and a version is still played in Afghanistan
with a pig, I think.
