I'm sorry to report that Johnny Burke passed away in 1990.
A disturbing story: I was travelling around Ireland that summer,
including trying to visit a few pipemakers, and had planned to drop in to
visit Burke and see his workshop. He apparently didn't have a phone, so
I couldn't ring ahead. However, I didn't think it'd be a problem, as I
was warmly welcomed at other pipe workshops when dropping by. Due to the
way my travels were going, though, I decided not to go to Wicklow as it
was going to be too far out of my way, and I still had friends to visit
in Sligo and Galway.
Well, he died -- of a heart attack, I believe -- on the very day I had been
planning to visit. (It completely weirded me out. I couldn't help but
wonder if I would have been able to help had I been there.) Two days later,
Davy Spillane piped at his funeral.
