Thanks for the update from the Valley. Keep us posted. I lived in LA
from '72 to '83 and managed to miss any of the damaging quakes. Just so
this doesn't come across to other listers as an in-group discussion,
James Porter, current head of the ethno program at UCLA, is a folklorist
and ethnomusicologist who has done a lot of work with traditional music,
mostly Scottish--articles on Jeannie Robertson, tune families, etc.
Personally, he was one of the most important of my professors when I was
in graduate school (Folklore, UCLA, '74). And he lives *very* close to
one of the freeway interchanges that is now history.
Anyway, please keep us/me posted.
