I think your argument has credence. I recently heard Sean Maguire play at the University of Cork and was awestruck with his virtuosity but this exactness didn't convey the musical message the way it is intended(at least for me).
I don't think Johnny Cunningham falls into this category though. He is able to take both the virtuopsity and feel and combine them into musically cohesive unit.At times this is not the easiest thing to accomplish. I think players like
Brendan Mulvihill and Jerry Holland have mastered this and that is why they are two of the best around in any tradition.
