This is a good area of conversation. I must say that this has been
one of the most enlightning threads of late. There is a spinoff to
all of this that I would like to add:
I have noticed that certain players can perform flawlessly under the
influence of enough alcohol to put anyone else seriously out of
coission. JC for example- Impossible to keep up with the man, but no
effect WHATSOEVER on his playing ability. Also, I have heard from a
friend after the latest Boys gig that Aly Bain does NOT have this
ability. Others on the list of "got it": Barney MacKenna, Jackie Daly
(I hope he gets better!).
I seem to be able to play most of my tunes after "a few", but
only ones that I have known for ages. New tunes are impossible. I
wonder it there is some sort of internalizing that takes place, where
old tunes become possible to "play in your sleep", just as it appears
that those who perform "distractedly" appear to do.
My theory is that it becomes more of a thing that you can just
"do" subconsciously after a time, like riding a bicycle, and when you
reach this point, it becomes subconciously expressive. Any thoughts?
ps- another thread- anyone else ever have the expirience of realizing
that you are playing a tune that you never learned?
