Thanks to Daniel F. Melia of California, John Coleman of England,
Mike Holland of Germany, Alan Ng of Wisconsin, and Peter Corrigan
of Ireland for setting me straight on my queries re the "bookalong"
and Ted Heath. The old tale is much more pungent now I know that
"bookalong"=buachala/n=ragwort=ragweed=goldenrod. The gold is
supposed to be buried next to goldenrod plant out on the Dublin
Road. The guy after the gold is greedy but a bit lazy, so when he
sees the gold-yellow flower, he decides it's too late to start
digging, and when he returns in the morning the goldenrods are
everywhere. No wonder the tale has lasted so long! As for Ted
Heath, I feel really dumb about that one. Of course he was the
PM, not the bandleader. The questions were for a little book I'm
working on called An Innocent in Ireland.
