It's introduction time, so I'll go next.
My name is Barry Angell. I am an amateur musician. I play guitar,
mandolin, and a little hammer dulcimer, bass, and fiddle. I've been
learning traditional fiddle tunes the last few years. I play both
American Old Time and Irish tunes. I play mandolin at our monthly
contra dance here in Nevada City, CA.
I like this music for its own sake, and also because it's a connection
to the past, which I feel we tend to lose in today's world.
There's the matter of cultural identity. I live in a place which is
devoid of a traditional culture. The music is brought here by people
who move from other parts of the world. So I adopt that music which is
close to my own heritage - New England, British Isles. I am not a
purist, though. I play anything that's fun to play.
I'm interested in improving my back-up guitar style. I've recently been
trying DADGAD tuning to that end.
I'd also like to become a good fiddler - but haven't put in the time on
I learned a lot of stuff from sheet mucic - now I'm learning tunes by
ear. It's more fun, and somehow more authentic.
Looking forward to reading your introduction.
