Sorry to crowd the bandwidth with Bearla, but this announcement about
the Gaelic Symposium raises a question I've been wondering about for a
long time about the history of the Irish in America.
Seamus' posting mentioned the Fenian movement. In a piece of historical
fiction I read about two years ago, the Fenians were the villians, portrayed
as violent, opportunistic thugs with strong connections to organized crime,
and conning large sums of money out of poor recent immigrants. Is this a
slanted view, or is there some truth to it? Does anyone have more
information about the Fenians they can direct me to?
