Fascinated by the discussion on CELTIC-L that man was said to be
created from four (or eight) components in Ireland and Norway. It
reminds me of the cosmological diagram in the mss of Byrhtferth's manual.
C. Wright also alluded to the "Four sods motif" as if it were a
commonplace, but the only place I know of it is the Anglo-Saxon charm for
blighted fields. Since I'm interested in the numbers four and eight -- they
have relations to the divisions of space (directions) and time (solstices,
equinoxes, and mid-quarters) this calls for a question -- and a cross posting.
Does anyone on either list have any further leads on these motifs?
(PS - found this marked pending im my OUTBASKET after I thought I sent it;
sorry if its a duplication)
