The ESB unions have served strike notice. Unless talks are successful the first day of strike action will be the 16th of December. As there are currently no details regarding the nature of the possible action nor the effects upon the national nor local grid(s), this ticket will contain a mixture of definite information and possible extrapolation.
This ticket will be updated with any new information.
HEAnet will work with clients if requested to see if any further improvements can be made, but engineering power resilience in all cases, especially bearing in mind the unusual nature of this possible event, may prove impossible.
HEAnet NOC: While some disruption is possible, the HEAnet NOC would expect to continue to operate as normal during any disruption.
Commercial Datacentres (Dublin Co-Location PoPs): In Citywest, Parkwest and Blanchardstown there is currently no expectation of disruption as all of these sites have UPS and generator backup. HEAnet core routers, HEAnet services and webhosting/co-location clients should all remain online.
Waterford Datacentre: No expectation of disruption due to UPSes with generator backup.
Dublin Client Optical PoPs: While at least one of the resilient locations on each campus has UPS & generator backup, individual client connections to each PoP cannot be guaranteed. This is due to the multiple pieces of equipment on any path, not all of which may have generator backup.
National Backbone Client PoPs: Not all NB PoP sites have generator backup. Where at least one of the resilient locations on each campus has UPS & generator backup (Athlone, Cork, Carlow, Galway, Waterford), no disruption is expected. At other locations (Dundalk, Letterkenny, Limerick, Sligo) there is no generator currently in place, so uptime will be limited to UPS batteries. Again, individual client connections to each PoP cannot be guaranteed. This is due to the multiple pieces of equipment on any path, not all of which may have generator backup.
Schools Network: No guarantees can be made regarding the uptime of any Schools connection in this scenario.
