TECHNICIAN POSITION IN ALGAL CULTIVATION
The Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee (UWM) is currently seeking a qualified person to perform technical tasks to support a project growing algae in wastewater effluent, in collaboration with a large metropolitan municipal water treatment facility. The position will be based in a research laboratory on the university campus but work will also be performed off-campus in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. The successful applicant will have a bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry or related field and some field and/or lab experience with aquatic plants or algae, monitoring or assessment of water or other environmental conditions.
Work will involve maintenance of outdoor algal cultivation tanks at the water treatment facility including monitoring growth conditions and algal growth, fluorometry, and maintenance of an in situ water sampler and remote logging equipment. Lab analyses will include assay of water nutrient concentrations, nutrient stoichiometry and pigment content in particulate algal biomass, microscopy to characterize algal assemblages, estimation of algal biomass, and nutrient uptake experiments. The project involves a number of collaborators including municipal facility personnel, so the position will involve liaising with these partners. Some supervision of student research may also be involved.
The position will be a limited term 21 month appointment with start date negotiable between February and April, 2013.
