BTW, there is some similarity between medieval Irish nature poetry
and certain poetic genres of East Asia. I am not so much thinking of
Japan, but rather of early medieval China (about the same time as
nature poetry flourished in Ireland). I once read poems by the (Zen?)
poet Han Shan in German translation. If German translations of some
of Irish nature poetry had been put side by side with them, it would
have been hard at times to distinguish between the two, were it not
for the rather un-Irish fauna and flora with which Han Shan's poems
I think this similarity was also noticed by KH Jackson, but I don't
know what exactly he said about it.
