I wanted to give a quick report on the Faddan More Psalter talk at the 14th
ICCS by John Gillis, who did a great deal of work on restoring the
manuscript. He gave an overview of the whole history of the psalter since
its discovery in 2006, including the considerable work that has gone into
I had posed the question to the list a while back as to whether anyone knew
about Old Irish glosses in the psalter. After his talk, I spoke to the
presenter about this, and he said that they have found no Old Irish in the
manuscript. Early on, they thought they had found a gloss, but as work
progressed, they realized that the word they found was actually 'alphabet'.
That was a bit disappointing from the perspective of the Old Irish language,
but the psalter remains a spectacular find, and it was clear just how
difficult the task of restoration was during the trip to the National
Museum, where we saw the Psalter exhibit.
Just wanted to give that quick update to answer the question I posed in July.
