5. It is not dissatisfaction with Táil’s race
[I swear] by the hand of Brian of the smooth swords!
that makes me go northwards
But love of Tadg, who hates us not.
6. Six months for me in the land behind me
with Brian on the Shannon, on the Suir,
and it will be another half year with Tadg
in Athlone of the strolling bards.
7. A better half year was not found,
they do not belittle the people of Cas
those two seasons away from Clain Táil
of the crowd, poetry, meetings, and service before a multitude.
* [This last line is still giving me difficulties]*
8. I have been over here from Beltaine
till every tree casts handfuls of foliage.
I will be in the north country from Samhain
till a cuckoo’s call, our summons.
*I have revamped lines 1 and 4 here, mostly following Dennis’ suggestions. But
I have replaced the controversion ‘that is’ with a comma, and ‘announcement’
9. Now the barnacle goose comes over the sea,
The salmon sleeps against the clear stream,
Each bird reaches its usual abode
My time is up now summer has come.
*This has got to be an autumn description: the winter birds have come, the
salmon no longer jump, it’s Samhoin, Nov. 1, and the summer has surely GONE?
Also I’ve messed around with line 2 some more.*
