O.E. dunn "dingy brown, dark-colored," perhaps from Celt. (cf. O.Ir.
donn "dark;" Gael. donn "brown, dark;" Welsh dwnn "brownish"), from PIE
*donnos, *dusnos "dark."
so originally dark tan rather than light tan?
