Some years ago, I saw an offer from Monotype UK to licence one of their
DVDs of fonts to universities at a discounted rate, for academic use
only (ie not usable by administrative offices, only by academic
departments and research units -- I think). At the time it wasn't
applicable outside the UK; but now I can't find any trace of it.
Do any foundries have similar arrangements that would be applicable here
I have a growing number of calls from academics wanting a wider range of
typefaces, especially those with the additional fonts usually termed
"expert". Although my unit and other production units (Marketing, and
the Printing Office) have bought normal commercial typefaces when
required, the rest of the university tends to use whatever comes with
their applications, or downloads the the dross from the melting-pot.
The chances of large-scale money being available these days are of
course zero, but I feel we should be making some effort.
